Inner World Explorations

Today I would like to talk to you about the Inner World, what it is, where it comes from and what it has to do with you.

The concept of the inner world was explored by Carl Jung with something he called “active imagination”. In fact, he healed many of his psychological patients with it. The idea is that our outer world is a reflection of the state of our inner world. By exploring this Inner World, by interacting with its inhabitants and creating peace and balance there, and by making it more conscious, our outer world will change to reflect that.

Pretty simple concept, right? And the great thing is: anyone can do it!

Before you jump right into meditation, there are a few prerequisites you would want to have in place. First, you need help. The Inner World can be quite overwhelming at times, so by having a guide you can navigate it more safely and easily.

I learned about this guide, how to find him, how to make sure he is the right one, from Edwin Steinbrecher. In the 70s, 80s and 90s, his Inner Guide Meditations has helped thousands of people to get to know their Inner Worlds, safely. His book, “Inner Guide Meditation” is still available in used book stores and online.

Finding your true inner guide will be your very first meditation. Steinbrecher figured out the best and most consistent way of doing just that. This first meditation is on youtube here:

Once you have your Inner Guide secured, arrange a regular meeting place with him so you can find him again next time you go in. Take some time to get to know your guide. Create a relationship with him. You want to be able to trust each other during the adventures you will have. Now the fun can really begin!

Next time you go in, meet your Inner Guide and ask him if there is anything you need to be aware of, anyone who wants to talk to you, or anything that needs to be taken care of. You might find yourself in the middle of a royal banquet, or you need to rescue a child from the dungeon, or battle demons or even fly on a dragon. Anything is possible here! The only limit is your imagination. The cool part is: your imagination originates in your Inner World, so anything you ‘make up’ is relevant! And if you rather write stories instead of meditate, go right ahead! It works just the same.

Interpreting the interactions and symbols from your adventures is like interpreting a dream. You can find information about the archetypes, which are part of everyone’s world, in the Tarot, in Astrology and in the teachings about the ‘Hero’s Journey’. Many of these figures and interactions will make sense when seen from that angle.

Archetypes are ancient, in fact they are part of the makeup of our so-called reality. Everyone has access to them. Your astrological birth chart might give you hints on which of the figures in your Inner World are in harmony, and which ones are fighting. They are all aspects of you, they make up your personality and guide your perceptions. Once you become aware of that, you can create balance by facing these inner figures and asking what they need from you. If they are hostile, ask your Inner Guide how to best approach them.

In the end, everyone wants to love and be loved. This is true for humans and any of the inner world figures alike. Let this knowledge lead your actions in there! Remember, if you create peace in your Inner World, peace will show up in your Outer World as well. And isn’t that what our world needs most at this time?

I hope you enjoyed this little quest into the Inner World and that you feel inspired to try it yourself.
